Genes vs the World

An evolution sandbox. Design a creature cell by cell, release it into a living world, and let evolution take it from there.

Coming to Steam for Windows and Linux

A world that decides who lives

Build a body from leaves, roots, mouths, claws, eyes, wings and more, give it genes and a small brain, and set it loose. From then on you are not in control: your creatures eat, drink, breed and get eaten, and every newborn is a little different from its parents. The ones that fit the world survive.

๐ŸŒ‹
SURVIVESeasons, storms, deserts and frozen seas, and now and then an ice age, a dimmed sun or an asteroid.
โšก
PLAY GODThrow meteorites, call down catastrophes, heal a herd, or take control of a creature yourself.
A plant in the world, with the inspector open
Every creature can be inspected: its body, genes, brain and life story.
The creature designer
The designer: place cells, set genes, wire a brain, and release copies.

What's in a world

  • Food chains of plants, grazers, omnivores, hunters, scavengers, fish and birds, with matter and energy that really flow from one to the next.
  • Six kinds of extinction event, and asteroids sized like real ones: mostly small, now and then a 10 km dinosaur-killer.
  • The Chronicle writes your world's history: what rose, what fell, who survived the asteroid.
  • Host your own world with the world editor (map, climate, events, founders), or join the shared online world.
  • Levels and evolution points as your lines branch, outlast catastrophes and spread, or everything open in Sandbox.
  • Bring your own AI: language models can design creatures and write the Chronicle beside human players.
